Christi del Vesuvio Bianco, 2001 |
Produced by Mastroberardino
Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio DOC
The DOC rules allow for a primary blend of Coda di Volpe
and Verdeca with the possible addition of Falanghina and
Greco. Minimum alcohol must be 12% before it can carry
the Lacryma Christi label. There is also a red, rosé
and spumante version.
Mastroberardino uses 100% of the native Coda di Volpe
variety and finishes the wine in all stainless steel to
preserve the fresh fruit flavors and aromas.
Tasting
Notes
A watery light lemon core gives way to a clear rim. The nose reveals hints of pineapple and white peach. The palate is light and refreshing with crisp acidity carrying the fresh fruit flavors straight to the back of the palate and resulting in a quite satisfying finish. This is a wine designed to accompany light antipasti, seafood risottos and pastas.
Campania Wine Fact
While certainly not a fact, the story behind the name deserves a re-telling. According to local lore, Lucifer upon being cast out from heaven stole a piece of Naples with his fingernail on his way to, well you know. This missing piece of Naples was to become the Bay of Naples. However, seeing the destruction, Christ began to cry. Where his tears fell is from whenst the vines for this wine began to grow. Bear in mind that this is but one version of this legend, with almost as many variations as there are styles of the wine.
