Produced
by I Normanni
Sannio Aglianico DOC
Wines grown in the province of Benevento may carry the
Sannio Aglianico label if they contain 85% of the stated
variety. The other 15% can be made up of a host of varieties
grown in and around the region. Generally speaking, this
is a large DOC zone with many varieties and types of wine
produced. Normanni's Sannio is grown on the gentle slopes
and utilizes only the Aglianico grape.
Tasting
Notes
The
wine has a brilliant ruby-red color, which intensifies
the aromas of cherry, chestnut and plums. The palate reveals
a spicy edge with similar red fruits as the nose. Tannins
tend to be softer adding to the flexibility of this wine.
However, the solid structure and balance make this wine
an ideal partner to roasted meats and game as well as
soft sheep's milk cheeses and stews.
Campania Wine Fact
Aglianico is a dark skinned grape variety most probably
of Greek origin. The name itself is a corruption of the
Italian word for Hellenic - Ellenico. This early budding
variety can be found in the mountainous regions of Southern
Italy, most notably in Taurasi and Benevento (which includes
Sannio) in Campania and Vulture in Basilicata. Aglianico
has shown its greatest potential when grown on volcanic
soils, a soil type that Campania excels in.
