with the Director of Slow Food on the Amalfi Coast

Seven Night Exclusive Tour

2013 TOUR DATES
April 26 - May 3
October 9 - 16

Overview
To enjoy a meaningful culinary experience in our region you have to be immersed in the traditional local life. Amalfi Life provides this indispensable local dimension through its unique bond with the land, sea, and people of the Amalfi Coast.

photo Giocondo Cavaliere is your tour leader and expert on "all things Amalfi". Throughout his long career in tourism he has worked tirelessly to support the authentic traditions of cuisine and wine that are the heritage of local families like his; small wonder that he has recently been named director of "Slow Food" on the Costa d'Amalfi.

Read what a recent client says about our Culinary Tour:
"[Your tour] has set a new standard for all of our family holidays in the future. Everything you organized worked just perfectly, and at each stage our whole party kept commenting how wonderful it all was. I must say that Giocondo turned it into a very special experience. We loved his attention to our needs and his joy of sharing his passion for Amalfi with us. Every day was different and a new experience."

Itinerary
Day One
Getting Acquainted with Amalfi

Upon your arrival at the Naples Airport we will provide a private transfer to Amalfi Village. You'll have time to unpack, relax, and marvel at the spectacular view from the balcony of your hotel room.

In the early evening we will meet for a leisurely walk through this enchanting village, stopping for an aperitif at a charming "Dolceria". Amalfi is a complex village with deep roots in the history and culture of Italy. In its heyday it was a major sea power, one of the four ancient maritime republics along with Pisa, Genoa, and Venice. Amalfi was a great prize for the Saracen and Norman invaders whose influences are reflected in its architecture, food, and language. Amalfi has a special charm that will surely seduce you.

photo Day Two
Amalfi to Positano by
Private Boat

This morning we embark on a coastal adventure in a private boat. Our destination is the village of Positano. Along the way, your senses will be delighted by the sweeping panorama, the sea and fresh breezes, and a great lunch at one of our favorite seaside restaurants.

Once in Positano we will take time to explore this kaleidoscope-like village, whose cliff-hanging structures cascade down through steep terraces to the sea. Later in the day we return to Amalfi and visit some of its cultural gems: the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea, the Cloister of Paradise, and the Papermill Museum where we'll learn about Amalfi's fascinating history as a center of papermaking.

Day Three
Cooking with Mamma

This morning we have a cooking class with a lady known as Mamma Agata. She will immerse you in this region's fabulous flavors and age-old cooking techniques using fresh, seasonal ingredients from her vast gardens. By the time the enormous lunch is over you will be begging Mamma to adopt you.

Amalfi In the afternoon we will visit the charming village of Ravello and have a tour of the main Cathedral, a walk through the famous formal gardens of the Villa Cimbrone, and stop in to one of the premier ceramic factories on the Coast.
Dinner on your own this evening.

Day Four
Pompeii, Ceramics, Home-cooking

Today we start with a private tour of Pompeii, followed by a visit to the town of Vietri -one of the great centers of ceramic artistry in Italy. We tour a factory founded in the mid 19th century, then let you browse the many colorful shops. On our drive back to Amalfi we will pass through the interesting villages along the eastern part of the coast - Cetara, Maiori, Minori, and Atrani - giving you a comprehensive view of this magnificent region.

photos This evening we have a special treat. We will go up to the countryside village of Furore to have a culinary demonstration and dinner in a local family home; a traditional home that cultivates olive and lemon groves, gardens of luscious vegetables, and local grapes for a wonderful homemade wine. Put these together with a warm, friendly atmosphere and you'll wonder if it can get any better than this!

Day Five
Island of Capri, Sorrentine Peninsula

Today we cruise to the island of Capri, a multi-faceted place of history, landscapes, interesting walks, and yes - shopping. We will have a guided tour of Capri's significant sites, lunch, and then we give you free time to wander the picturesque paths, to shop, or to enjoy a cappuccino and some people-watching in the famous Piazzetta.

In the late afternoon we will board a hydrofoil to Sorrento and then a minibus for a panoramic drive around the Sorrentine Peninsula, hoping to catch a glimpse of the sunset over Capri, a sight of transcendent beauty.

Amalfi Day Six
The Wine between the Mountains

A few short miles behind this awesome coastline is a quiet world of traditional homesteads situated amidst miles and miles of vine-covered hills. This is Tramonti. Here we will visit a family-owned winery that makes organic wines from rare grape varieties indigenous to this region. We will walk the vineyards, tour the winery, and enjoy a sumptuous lunch with the winemaker in the privacy of a warm and inviting country villa. We, at Amalfi Life, cannot produce a more perfect setting through which to impart the authentic local life. It's that simple!

Day Seven
Valley of the Old Mills

An authentic experience of the Amalfi Coast is incomplete without a country walk! So, this morning we will take you for a walk down a well-loved trail known as the Valle dei Mulini. This lovely woods-walk follows the river as it twists and turns past remnants of the old mills of Amalfi's illustrious paper-making past. All you will require is a sturdy pair of sneakers and your camera. Our walk ends at the home of a dear friend who happens to have excellent culinary skills. Here we will enjoy a lemon-infused lunch as well as a generous helping of homespun Amalfitan hospitality.

photo You'll have some free time in the late afternoon to do last-minute shopping, or to just relax with a glass of wine on your balcony. We will meet once more for a Gala Farewell Dinner.

Morning of Day Eight
Breakfast and Departure (or on to your next destination).
